How to start with AI in your dental practice
You don't need an AI strategy; you need one tool that fixes your biggest problem, rolled out carefully. Here's a practical five-step plan that keeps the cost low and the risk lower.
1. Find your biggest leak first
Before you look at any tool, name the problem. Are you missing findings on X-rays? Losing new-patient calls? Drowning in perio charting? Watching the recall list gather dust? The right first tool is the one that fixes your single biggest leak, not the flashiest demo. For most small practices it's imaging (Denti.AI) or the phones (Peerlogic, Weave).
2. Pick one tool, with a real price
Resist the urge to buy a suite. Pick one tool that targets your leak, and favor one with a published price so you can budget without a sales process, Denti.AI from $49/mo, Peerlogic at $399/mo, Weave from $199/mo. For quote-only tools like Pearl or Overjet, get the all-in number in writing and compare it against the priced options.
3. Confirm the BAA and data handling
Before go-live, get the signed Business Associate Agreement and a clear answer on how your PHI is stored and deleted. Skipping this is the one shortcut that can actually hurt you. Our HIPAA guide has the checklist.
4. Pilot on one operatory or one workflow
Roll the tool out small, one chair, one front-desk person, one week, and keep your old process running alongside it. That's how you learn whether it actually helps without betting the practice on it. Fold in team training here: the tool only works if the people using it trust it.
5. Measure, then expand
Decide up front what "working" means, findings caught, calls booked, minutes saved, and check it against the pilot before you expand. If it earns its keep, roll it wider; if it doesn't, you've lost a month, not a year. Then repeat the loop for your next-biggest leak. A local pro can run this whole process for you if you'd rather not.
